The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District (District) Board of Directors (Board) voted on Friday, January 26, 2024, to solicit public input on five-year toll increase options at the Golden Gate Bridge that will provide funding for bridge operations and maintenance, as well as public transit services.
The revenue generated through the toll increase will allow the District to address a portion of a projected $220 million five-year shortfall. Bridge tolls supply the majority of the District’s revenue. Roughly two-thirds of annual toll revenue is used to maintain and operate the Golden Gate Bridge, and the third is used to operate Golden Gate bus and ferry transit services. The District requires additional revenue to continue to fund operations and capital projects for the Golden Gate Bridge and its transit services.
The four proposed toll rate options, virtual open houses, and public hearing information are listed below. If approved, any new toll program would go into effect beginning July 1, 2024.
The toll rate will remain the lowest for FasTrak customers, who comprise the vast majority of Golden Gate Bridge drivers. Pay-As-You-Go customers pay either in advance of their trip or shortly after, and can use either a cash payment network or pay their toll online. Invoice customers are those who choose to pay the bill they receive in the mail after a crossing.
