The Golden Gate Bridge is a national treasure, an architectural gem set in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Every year visitors come to marvel at the sight, and over 30 million vehicles cross the Bridge annually. But the Bridge is only one part of a transportation system that runs from San Francisco 50 miles north to Santa Rosa. The Bridge also runs a bus and ferry fleet. Together, the Bridge, Bus, and Ferry divisions make up the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District (District).
The District is governed by a board of directors with 19 seats. Our board members represent the six counties that voted in 1925 to be part of a newly formed special district which would oversee the financing, design, and construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Those six counties - San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, portions of Napa and Mendocino, and Del Norte County put up the bond money to build the Bridge.
