August 15, 1970 – August 15, 2020
In August, Golden Gate Ferry (GGF) will celebrate its golden anniversary, marking 50 years of providing first-class ferry service between Marin County and San Francisco. During this time, we’ve provided a reliable and scenic mode of transportation for commuters and tourists, and we’ve been the eyes and ears on the Bay, providing a critical emergency response to those in distress.
Our passengers, in addition to our thousands of daily commuters, have included 1906 earthquake survivors, a few presidents, and countless baseball fans and concertgoers. And, we’ve been a crucial resource in evacuating people from San Francisco, as we did after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and on September 11, 2001. Many fondly remember our “Lunch for the Office Bunch” trips at noon for Financial District employees, and the holiday “Merry Ferry” and its onboard surprises for shoppers. Sports enthusiasts rely on us to get to Giants games, Warriors games, and the annual Bay to Breakers.
Over the past 50 years, Golden Gate Ferry has touched many lives and we will continue to do so, as safely as possible, in this new era. We extend our gratitude to you, our customers, and we look forward to seeing you onboard again soon.
