About our Fleet

Golden Gate Ferry launched service in the early 1970s with the original M.S. Golden Gate and a small fleet of monohull vessels. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, we expanded with high-speed aluminum catamarans that continue to serve our busy Larkspur–San Francisco route today.

After decades of reliable service, many of our vessels have reached the end of their useful life and need to be replaced to meet modern emissions standards.

Over the next eight years, we’ll be rolling out a brand-new fleet of high speed, low-emission ferries, each built to the same design for better efficiency, reliability, and passenger experience. At their November 2025 meeting, the Board approved a contract to build the first two vessels in this long-term replacement program.

The new M.V. Liwa-class design carries 500 passengers and is expected to enter service in 2028. These next-generation ferries will cut emissions by 80% and use 30% less power thanks to an improved hull design, while maintaining the fast, dependable service our riders count on.

Along with the M.V. Liwa, the order includes a replacement for the M.V. Del Norte, built to the same specifications. These will be the first two vessels in our future fleet of seven to eight identical ferries, arriving through 2033 and creating a consistent, modern experience across Golden Gate Ferry.
