Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry fare increase July 1, 2024. More here >
Local bus rides within San Francisco on Golden Gate Transit are now permitted. For more information, read our news item: Golden Gate Transit Helps Muni Customers During Service Reduction.
Golden Gate Transit bus fares vary according to trip length and number of fare zones crossed. Riders can pay their fare with cash, Clipper (card or mobile app), a period pass, or a change card. Riders can also ride with a transfer.
Adult riders are ages 19 to 64, youth riders are ages 5 to 18, and senior riders are ages 65 and up. All riders are required to pay a fare, except children 4 and younger who ride for free when accompanied by an adult (limit 2 children per adult).
Discounts are available for Clipper users (card or mobile app); youth; seniors; and disabled riders with DMV disabled placard ID, RTC card, Medicare card, or ID card for persons with disabilities from another transit agency; and low-income adults. Riders can also use a Marin Transit day or monthly pass for unlimited rides within Marin County for the specified time frame.
Adult Clipper cards are available from many Bay Area retail locations or download the Clipper app to pay your fare using your smart phone. Youth, senior, and RTC Clipper cards are issued by the Golden Gate Transit Customer Service Center (San Rafael Transit Center, Platform D, 850 Tamalpais Avenue, San Rafael; hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Youth and senior Clipper cards may also be obtained by mail, email, or fax. Find additional in-person locations at the Clipper website or by calling 1-877-878-8883. Clipper START cards provide a 50% discount on most Golden Gate bus and ferry rides for eligible low-income adults. To apply, visit the Clipper START website, call 1-855-614-9149, or email help@clipperstartcard.com. Clipper card funds (e-cash) can be transferred at any time to the Clipper mobile app.
Select "fare table" at left to determine your fare.
If you will need a transfer to continue your trip, please advise the driver of your final destination when boarding the bus, prior to paying your fare. A change card will be issued if you are due more than $1.00 in change, but you must inform your driver before putting your money in the farebox. This change card can be used on future Golden Gate Transit bus trips. Change cards are non-refundable and are not exchangeable.
