The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District has adopted several new measures in an effort to improve safety on the Golden Gate Bridge. Public safety is always top priority at the Golden Gate Bridge whether you're crossing by bike, on foot, or in a vehicle. As more people bike across the Bridge, especially on e-bikes, the policies were reviewed and updated to better address current conditions and safety trends. The new policies will take effect on January 1, 2022.
After conducting an extensive bicycle safety study and public outreach process, our Board recently adopted a number of measures to increase bicycle access on the Bridge while making the sidewalks safer for all users. These measures include:

Allowing all classes of e-bikes on Bridge sidewalks;

A 15 mph bicycle speed limit on Bridge sidewalks, reduced to 5 mph around the towers;

Additional signage and wayfinding on Bridge sidewalks and approaches;

Use of the east sidewalk for bicyclists during high wind events; and
-
Establishment of a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

In addition to these measures, indicator lights were developed and installed to let people know where to ride as they approach the Bridge. During public outreach for the recent bicycle safety study, people expressed confusion about which side of the Bridge was open to cyclists at various times of the day. The new indicator lights were designed to help alleviate this confusion and will also help alert cyclists when special events or high winds prompt unexpected west sidewalk closures.
Taken together, we hope these changes will make walking and biking across the Golden Gate Bridge a safer and more pleasant experience for all.
