Golden Gate Transit Streamlines Fare Structure

Effective December 11, 2005

Beginning Sunday, December 11 Golden Gate Transit (GGT) will have fewer fare zones. GGT fares are based on a zone system and are determined by which fare zone the trip begins in and which fare zone it ends in.  On December 11, the existing 10 fare zones will be compressed into seven fare zones resulting in a reduction of possible fare choices for customers from more than 300 to less than 60.

Fare zone 7 (Stinson Beach) and fare zone 9 (Tiburon) are being added to fare zone 2 (Sausalito), and fare zone 8 (Woodacre, Lagunitas) is being added to fare zone 3 (San Rafael/Larkspur/Corte Madera/San Anselmo). Fare zone 10 (East Bay) will be eliminated and a single fare for travel on GGT Routes 40/42 between the East Bay across the Richmond San Rafel Bridge and GGT and GGF service area will be set at $3.25.

What does this mean to GGT fares?

Some fares will decrease and some will increase. Here are some key examples of fare that change:

  • Local fares for travel within Marin County are set by Marin County Transit District and DO NOT change. These fares remain at $2 for adults and $1 for youth/seniors.
  • Commuters continue to receive 20% off the adult cash fare when buying books of 20 tickets. Ticket books with an expiration date of December 31, 2005, will be valid through January 31, 2006.
  • Youth discount will increase from 25% to 50% off the adult cash fare resulting in a lower cash fare for youth for all travel on GGT and GGF. The youth discount will now be consistent with the 50% discount provided to Seniors and Persons with Disabilities and consistent with the youth discount for travel within Marin set by Marin County Transit District at 50%.
  • Travel between San Francisco (fare zone 1) and Lagunitas (currently fare zone 8 but is being added to fare zone 3) is currently $6.35, the new fare would be $3.95, a cash fare reduction of $2.40 per trip.
  • Travel between San Francisco (fare zone 1) and Tiburon (currently fare zone 9 but is being added to fare zone 2) is currently $3.95, the new fare would be $3.25, a cash fare reduction of $0.70 per trip.
  • A new single fare of $3.25 for travel on GGT Routes 40/42 will be established. For those traveling on Routes 40/42 across the Richmond Bridge to destinations in south Marin and north Marin and Sonoma County, fares are reduced.  For those traveling on Routes 40/42 across the Richmond Bridge to central Marin, there is no change to the cash fare—it remains at $3.25. For those traveling within the East Bay on Routes 40/42 there is a $1.30 cash fare increase over the current fare of $1.95.
  • Definition of “youth” for both GGT and GGF will be the same—ages 6 to 18. Currently, GGT youth definition is ages 6 to 18 and for GGF, it is ages 6 to 12.This means a wider age range will now qualify for youth fares on GGF.
  • The GGF Weekend Family Fare is eliminated. This fare allowed two children, age 12 and under, accompanied by an adult paying the full fare, to ride free. With the change in the age for the ferry youth fare definition from ages 6 to 12 to ages 6 to 18, coupled with the increase in the youth discount from 25% to 50%, the Family Fare is being eliminated.
  • The GGF group fare of 10 cents for groups of children through age 17 and Seniors is eliminated. Seniors will be charged the current individual fares: adult cash ferry fare of $6.45 and $3.20 for Seniors ages 65+.  Children will be charged the individual fares of $3.20 for Youth ages 6-18 and free for Children 5 and under.
