Special License Plate Available...Nature Within Reach

On July 22, 2008, Assemblyman Mark Leno, on behalf of the Coastal Conservancy, unveiled a new San Francisco Bay Area special license plate depicting the Golden Gate Bridge and the tagline “Nature Within Reach.” The use of the image of the Golden Gate Bridge for the license plate was authorized by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District in the spirit of regional community partnership.

The license plate was developed by the Coastal Conservancy as a fundraiser, with the goal of raising $1 million annually to directly fund restoration, conservation, and public access projects throughout the nine-county Bay Area.

It is anticipated that the new license plate will be issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles sometime in 2010 following the receipt of the required 7,500 paid pledges. The plates costs $50 for initial registration ($90 for personalized plates), with a $40 annual renewal fee ($70 for personalized plates). The goal is have more than 25,000 of the plates in circulation.
