NO IMPACTS TO GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE ANTICIPATED DURING
ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ TRIATHLON ON SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 2005

On Sunday, June 12, 2005, this year’s Escape From AlcatrazSM Triathlon will take place on a course that includes a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. The race continues with an 18 mile bike ride out the Great Highway, through the Golden Gate Park, and concludes with an 8 mile run through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Finish Line is at The Marina Green.

The southeast parking lot at the Golden Gate Bridge will remain open and only be accessible from Highway 101 during the period from about 7:30 am to 11 am when Lincoln Boulevard is closed from the Long Avenue area to Baker Beach.

Following the swim and the bike ride, the 8 mile run portion of the race does pass under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge twice. The run portion of the race course is summarized as follows: The run to Baker Beach Battery begins with the runners leaving The Marina Green, running west into Crissy Field to Fort Point located below the Golden Gate Bridge. From Fort Point, the runners climb up and pass under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge and onto the Coast Trail. Runners will be next to the Coastal Defense Batteries until they reach Lincoln Blvd, just past Battery Dynamite. They parallel Lincoln Blvd. on the trail above the Coastal Bluffs to Baker Beach. After reaching the top of the Sand Ladder, runners will go left on the Coast Trail and head back towards the Finish Line via Lincoln Blvd. They will then cross back under the Golden Gate Bridge, go down to sea level and on to the Finish Line at Marina Green.
