Clippper® Card Changes for Golden Gate Ferry Customers

Golden Gate Ferry customers are no strangers to using the Clipper® card for fare payment. In July 2011, Golden Gate Ferry made the switch to exclusively offering Clipper cards and limited value cards via ticket vending machines, and suspended the use of cash fare payment. Today, 83 percent of Larkspur Ferry and 69 percent of Sausalito Ferry customers use the Clipper card.

Effective Friday, December 14, 2012, Clipper card customers will see a few changes that they need to be aware of to maintain their seamless fare payment experience at Golden Gate Ferry.

Clipper card customers wanting to ride Golden Gate Ferry will now:

  1. Have to maintain a minimum balance of $4.25 on their Clipper card to tag on to board a Golden Gate Ferry. The minimum balance requirement applies to adult, senior, youth, persons with disabilities cards. If you do not have the minimum balance, the card reader will display a red light and beep three times.
  2. Be allowed to add a maximum E-cash value of $100 per transaction to their Clipper card at one of the ticket vending machines located at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, San Francisco Ferry Terminal, or the Sausalito Ferry Landing. A Clipper card can still hold up to $300 in E-cash.


1.  Use the Clipper Card Autoload Feature

It is important that you keep track of your card balance. An easy, convenient, and seamless way to maintain the required $4.25 minimum balance on your Clipper card is to use the Autoload feature. Autoload allows you to pre-authorize a direct and secure transfer of funds from a credit card or bank account that will be added to your Clipper card in the form of cash value. Then, whenever your cash value balance falls below $10, the pre-set value will be automatically added onto your card. Also, by using Autoload your Clipper card is registered, which means that if your Clipper card is ever lost, stolen or damaged, you can replace it and the balance on it for a small fee.

When you first set up Autoload using a credit card, it may take up to 3-5 days for your new Autoload set-up to take effect. If you use a bank account, it may take 5 to 10 business days. Your card balance will not be updated until you have tagged your card and loaded the value. If you need to add value to your card and use it immediately, do so at one of the ticket vending machines at the ferry terminals.

2.  Add E-Cash to your Clipper Card at a Ticket Vending Machine located at Ferry Terminals

Using a ticket vending machine, follow the on-screen directions to add various values to the card including $10, $15, $20, $40, etc., up to a maximum of $100.

Additional Clipper Card Information

  • Only Adult Clipper cards can be purchased at the ticket vending machines at the Golden Gate Ferry terminals.
  • Youth and senior cards (which provide the appropriate discounted fares) must be applied for Youth and Senior Clipper cards can be applied for at the San Rafael Transit Center as well as several other Bay Area locations listed here:
  • Clipper cards and cash value loaded onto them never expire.
  • Can also be used on Golden Gate Transit buses, Muni, BART, AC Transit, VTA, SamTrans, Caltrain.

  • It is highly recommended that you register your Clipper card so if your card is ever lost, stolen or damaged, you can get your balance restored.
