Board of Directors Votes to Oppose AB 748
On May 13 the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District) voted 12 in
favor and 5 opposed to oppose AB 748 which would prohibit the setting of bicycle and pedestrian tolls by agencies and
district operating public highways and bridges in California. Board members expressed
concern regarding the Legislature taking a role in setting policy for a local special district like the Bridge District
and as such voted to oppose AB 748.
Presently, there is NO toll increase proposal of any kind under specific consideration by the Board of Directors. The
Board is looking at a range of revenue options to balance our remaining $70 million five-year shortfall- these
discussions will take place later this year. The total shortfall has been reduced over the last three years by 85% by
means of toll and fare increases, bus service reductions, and internal expense reductions from salary freezes, reduced
employee benefits and a 22% staffing reduction.
