Golden Gate Bridge Weekend Traffic Improvements

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (GGBHTD) will improve traffic flow across the Bridge beginning this weekend, for the next five weekends, through restricting traffic to the parking lots on both ends of the Bridge. These measures are expected to mitigate the significant traffic backups that occur on busy weekends as numerous visitors queue for a limited number of parking spaces.

Vista Point belongs to Caltrans and is not part of the Bridge District’s property. Today, Caltrans issued a permit to allow the District to conduct these restrictions at Vista Point. The District will restrict personal vehicle access at the Welcome Center parking lot at the south end of the Bridge, as well as the Vista Point parking lot at the north end of the Bridge. These restrictions will occur between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. during all Saturdays and Sundays in August, as well as Labor Day weekend, from Saturday, September 2 through Monday, September 4, 2017.

Tour buses will be allowed to park at both the Welcome Center lot and Vista Point. Taxis and rideshare vehicles will be allowed to pick-up and drop off passengers at the Welcome Center ONLY, but will not be allowed to enter Vista Point. No taxi or rideshare staging or waiting will be allowed. Personal vehicles are not permitted in either parking lot.

The Welcome Center will still be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily and cafés will be open to serve food and drink as usual. Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation or private tour buses to visit the Welcome Center and the Bridge. Bicyclists are always welcome.

Electronic signs will notify drivers of the lot closures in advance of the Bridge, and signs will also be placed on the Bridge itself leading up to the Vista Point exit.
