Afternoon Commute Lane Configuration Change

Our afternoon lane diversions, which add a 4th lane northbound between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, have been very successful in minimizing delays for northbound commuters during that time period. Unfortunately, funneling southbound traffic into the remaining 2 lanes has introduced significant delays southbound during the same time period. While the northbound traffic flow recovers relatively quickly once a 4th lane is added, southbound delays build rapidly with the loss of 1 lane and do not resolve as quickly once the third southbound lane is restored at 5:30 p.m.

In an attempt to better balance capacity and demand, we will be making a minor adjustment to our lane diversion schedule effective Tuesday, July 5. The change will consist of shortening the time the Bridge is in a 4-North, 2-South configuration from a full hour to just thirty minutes.

Starting on Tuesday, July 5, the 4th northbound lane will be provided for northbound traffic for a shorter time, between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. (Please note that it takes 30 minutes for the zipper trucks to complete a lane change, which means the diversion will start at 3:30 p.m. and complete at 5:00 p.m.). On Monday afternoons, the lane configuration will remain at 3 North / 3 South.

We are hopeful this adjustment will ease the burden a bit for southbound drivers, but still provide the necessary congestion relief northbound. The intent is to balance delay time for all drivers, without creating unreasonable delays for anyone.

Here’s the schedule for the new afternoon commute across the Golden Gate Bridge beginning July 5, 2016.

Monday 3 North / 3 South
Tuesday 4 North / 2 South from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday 4 North / 2 South from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday 4 North / 2 South from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday 4 North / 2 South from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The District will continue to monitor traffic and the impacts of these changes and will continue to make adjustments if and as warranted.
