Bicycle and Pedestrian Impacts Continue through Mid-May

Visitor Improvements at Golden Gate Bridge South End
Close Golden Gate Bridge West Sidewalk & Battery East through Mid-May 2012

Main Cable Painting Continues along Both Sidewalks

Several critical projects are underway now at the Golden Gate Bridge that involve impacts to bicyclists and pedestrians.

WEST SIDEWALK and PORTIONS OF BATTERY EAST TRAIL CLOSED, January 17 to May 23, 2012 (weather depending); bicycles remain on EAST sidewalk 24/7 during the West Sidewalk closure.

As part of the partnership with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District involving a series of visitor experience improvements on the south end of the span, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service are making improvements to the section of the Battery East Bay Trail on the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, including the portion leading onto the west sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This construction effort is the final phase of improvements on the Battery East Bay Trail and will include installation of dedicated bicycle and pedestrian lanes, trail re-surfacing and grade improvements, replaced fencing and lighting, and construction of the Fort Point Vista. Bicyclists will be directed to use the east sidewalk for the duration of the closure.

In addition to the west sidewalk closure, detours through the Golden Gate Bridge plaza will change over the three month period to accommodate other construction activities. Signage will be updated to direct bicyclists and pedestrians.
