Temporary West Sidewalk Closure Creates Limited Impact to Bicyclists

Monday, March 27 - Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Beginning Monday, March 27 at approximately 7 am and continuing through to approximately 3:30 pm on Wednesday, March 29, the west sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed to bicyclists between the normal weekday hours of operation from 3:30 pm to 6 pm.  During these hours, bicyclists will be required to remain on the East sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge. Pedestrians are not allowed access to the West sidewalk.

The three-day west sidewalk closure is required so that new telecommunications cable can be installed across the span.  Because of the nature of the work, manholes on the sidewalk must remain open throughout the entire installation process, rendering the sidewalk impassable to and unsafe for bicyclists.  If this work is completed ahead of schedule, the sidewalks will reopen as soon as possible.  This work may be re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather, I which another updated announcement will be issued.

Additional Background

The hours currently in effect for bicyclists are as follows:

Weekdays: EAST sidewalk 6 am to 3:30 pm, WEST sidewalk 3:30 pm to 6 pm, and EAST sidewalk 6 pm to 6 am via remotely controlled security gates.

Weekends and holidays: WEST sidewalk 6 am to 6 pm and EAST sidewalk 6 pm to 6 am via remotely controlled security gates.

Bicycle hours on the Golden Gate Bridge are modified reflect Pacific Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time and will be modified on April 2, 2006.
