Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District to

Realign and Improve Merchant Road

Construction began in August 2006 to realign Merchant Road to create an improved connection to The Presidio Trust that will more safely accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The existing intersection of Merchant Road and Lincoln Boulevard will be replaced with a new 4-way intersection with a sidewalk, bicycle lanes and a crosswalk by realigning and connecting Merchant Road at Lincoln Boulevard and Storey Road.  In addition, a paved and lighted parking lot will be added on the east side of Merchant Road.  This project is being undertaken by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, The Presidio Trust and Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

To minimize traffic and parking disruptions on Merchant Road, the work will be done in stages.  The parking areas and upper portion of the roadway are anticipated to be completed in early November 2006 and the reconstruction of the existing portion of the roadway completed in December 2006. Traffic using Merchant Road during construction should expect some delays, and traffic will be flagged when necessary.

The roadway will be closed from Friday evening until Monday morning over one weekend in early December 2006, which will be announced when the date is determined.
