Status of Golden Gate Transit Bus, Golden Gate Ferry, and Gate Golden Bridge

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closed on Tuesday evening, October 27, 2009, and reopened at 8:56 am on Monday, November 2, 2009. During this time, the Golden Gate Bridge operated six lanes of traffic to accommodate the traffic as best as was possible, given the traffic volumes using the span. Also, during this time, on weekdays, Golden Gate Ferry added a morning departure at 7:30 am.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was closed from Tuesday evening, October 27, 2009, to 8:56 am on Monday, November 2, 2009. During this time, Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry added ONE departure at 7:30 am on the mornings of October 28, 29, 30 and November 2. TOTAL RIDERSHIP FOR THE COMMUTE PERIODS (am and pm) are shown below.

Estimated Revenue and Cost for GGBHTD during the Bay Bridge Closure

The added revenue and associated costs for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District during the closure of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge are not yet audited and not yet fully known. This is an educated guess at where we are:

Over the five day period from Wednesday, October 28 to Sunday, November 1, 2009 (not including today 11/2), the Golden Gate Bridge accommodated an estimated 70,000 additional vehicles when compared to the same days a week prior
Having not yet conducted an audit of the toll revenues, which takes into account things like free-toll passage for carpools, etc., the gross excess toll revenue collected would be $350,000 based on an average toll collected of about $5.09
Golden Gate Ferry costs were roughly $3,500 per day for 4 days that we added a ferry trip = $14,000
Excess Golden Gate Bridge costs were roughly $3,000 per day for 5 days = $15,000
Golden Gate Transit bus costs due to the traffic delays incurred in providing services (including, for example, added fuel cost and added overtime for dispatchers, supervisors, mechanics, bus drivers) were $25,000 to $35,000 for the 5 days
Total added cost for GGBHTD is in the range of about $54,000 to $64,000 for the 5 days

AGAIN, NONE of this data is audited; these are educated guesstimates at this time.

The Golden Gate Bridge did collect additional toll revenues during the closure of the Bay Bridge; this was a unique one-time occurrence and the additional revenues will be included, as is all toll revenue, in the general fund for the current fiscal year. Further, our organization experienced added costs to operate as noted above.

We safely accommodated an estimated 70,000 additional vehicles without out ANY significant incidents. If the Golden Gate Bridge were to close for some unforeseen reason, we would expect our neighbor Caltrans-operated bridges to accommodate our regular users.
