Pay a Toll for a Vehicle with No License Plate
Motorists in vehicles without a license plate are responsible for paying their toll. Golden Gate Bridge tolls are assessed in the southbound direction only, headed into San Francisco. Until your license plates are properly mounted on the front and rear of your vehicle, there are four ways to pay your toll.
Ways to Pay
- Open a FasTrak Account by purchasing a FasTrak toll tag for $25 ($20 refundable deposit and $5 in prepaid tolls) at Costco, Safeway, or Walgreens; find a location near you. Once you purchase the toll tag, you must register it by calling the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center at (877) BAY-TOLL (877-229-8655) or 415-486-8655 outside California (click here for hours of operation). Have the toll tag number and activation code ready. Your tolls can then be deducted easily from your FasTrak Account. Be sure to add your license plate information to your FasTrak account once you receive it.
- Make a One-Time Payment using a credit card at www.bayareafastrak.org. You will need to know your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Make a One-Time Payment in person at one of our many Cash Payment Locations. You can pay for up to 10 toll crossing at a time. Payments are valid for up to 30 days and can be made BEFORE or within 48 hours AFTER crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in the tolling direction (southbound into San Francisco). Keep your receipt!
- Make a One-Time Payment in person at the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center (effective June 17, 2014) at 62 First Street, San Francisco, CA 94105 (near the intersection of Market and First Streets). Click here for hours of operation.
Please note that on July 1, 2012, AB 1215 went into effect to expedite the vehicle registration process for vehicles sold by dealers in the state of California. Also, in California, with the exception of new cars, vehicles without properly mounted license plates are in violation of California Vehicle Code Section 5200.
