SAN FRANCISCO - Residents of Corte Madera located on the northeast side of the Tiburon Peninsula, will see increased emergency response activity as area responders participate in an industry-led exercise on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from approximately 9 am to 1 pm.

The interagency exercise, sponsored by Golden Gate Ferry in coordination with Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, will take place at Anchorage 4 which is located off the Tiburon Peninsula. The exercise is designed to test the Bay Area Vessel Mutual Assistance Plan including agency emergency evacuation capabilities, and mass rescue operations, as well as the ferry system transportation infrastructure.

The Golden Gate Ferry exercise will allow all participants the opportunity to test interagency coordination, communications, and planning effectiveness, and will strengthen agency partnerships invaluable in maintaining a highly effective safety and security posture within the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Coast Guard will be participating by enforcing a safety zone around the two ferries and several response vessels participating in the exercise, as well as providing boats for exercise play. Over 150 California Maritime Academy students will play the role of passengers as emergency responders simulate response efforts.

Exercise participants also include Marin County Sherriff's Department, the National Park Service, and Marine units from Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin counties. The fire departments from Larkspur, Tiburon, Novato, Ross Valley and Southern Marin will also be participating.

Portions of the exercise will be visible from the shore at the Tiburon Yacht Club at Paradise Cay. There are no media "ride-alongs" permitted onboard the ferry vessels for the efficiency of the exercise and the safety of all participants.

Golden Gate Ferry spokesperson Mary Currie will be available for media inquiry between 9 am and 1 pm at the Tiburon Yacht Club in Paradise Cay. For more information, contact 415-317-2222.
