GOLDEN GATE LARKSPUR FERRY WELCOMES

BICYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS VIA CAL PARK TUNNEL

COUNTY OF MARIN ANNOUNCES CAL PARK TUNNEL OPENING FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010

The County of Marin’s Cal Park Hill Tunnel Rehabilitation and Multi-Use Pathway is a $27 million project that, once opened on December 10, 2010, will provide a safe and efficient non-motorized alternative path of travel connecting two major transit facilities in Marin County, the Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry Terminal (LFT) and the Golden Gate Transit Center in San Rafael. This new route will reduce travel time between these public transportation facilities while eliminating traffic conflicts allowing for easy travel on an accessible path that is open to commuters, recreational cyclists and pedestrians of all ability levels. The project includes provisions to accommodate the shared use of the right-of-way with future commuter passenger rail service operated by SMART. Once bicyclists and pedestrians traveling south through the Cal Park Tunnel reach LFT, they will be able to lock their bikes at the terminal and board a ferry bound for San Francisco.

Bike Capacity on Board Larkspur Ferry Vessels: On weekdays, the number of bikes that can be accommodated on the high-speed catamarans is limited to 15, on a first–come, first-serve basis. On weekends, bike capacity aboard the vessels is available on a first-come first serve basis and up to 100 bikes can be accommodated.

Bike Rack Capacity at Larkspur Ferry Terminal: In 2011, bike rack capacity will be significantly expanded to provide an additional 90 bike spaces inside the paid waiting area. Currently, up to 71 bikes can be accommodated at the Terminal as follows: Inside the paid waiting area, in a weather protected location, there is one bike rack that can accommodate 11 bikes. Outside the paid waiting area, not weather protected, there are 30 racks that can accommodate 60 bikes.
