July 7, 2015

Visitor parking lots at the Golden Gate Bridge will be shut down during the Caltrans closure of Doyle Drive, from 8:00 p.m. on July 9th through 5:00 a.m. on July 13th, 2015. This includes the parking lot on the south end of the Bridge, which is next to the Visitor Pavilion and gift shop. It also includes the Dillingham and Vista Point lots on the north end of the Bridge. Tour buses and MUNI buses will not be using those lots during the closure. Visitors attempting to park will be turned away. Please walk or bike to the Bridge during the closure, as traffic backups will be significant. For details on the road closures, please visit: http://www.presidioparkway.org/.

Bridge District engineers will be modifying the roadway on both the north and sound end during the Doyle Drive closure. Expect lane reductions overnight, starting at approximately 10:00 p.m. Toll plaza lanes 1-4 will remain open, but the others will be closed for the duration of the work.

On the south end, engineers will extend the moveable median barrier about 900 feet south, to conform to the new Doyle Drive concrete median barrier at the District’s property line. The northbound lanes leading to the toll plaza will also be restriped and drivers should carefully watch for the new lane pattern as they navigate traffic.

On the north end, engineers will be making roadway changes to the southbound approach to the Bridge to make it simpler for drivers to identify the merges. Currently, the configuration that drivers encounter is first the Sausalito off ramp, then a merge, then the Sausalito on ramp and another merge. After the work is completed, drivers will encounter the entrance to the Sausalito off ramp, then two merges, then the Sausalito on ramp. The entry to the off ramp will move 150 feet north and the entry from the on ramp will move 400 feet to the south. Contractors will also extend the moveable median barrier 100 feet to the north.

The District expects the Caltrans closure of Doyle Drive will seriously impact traffic on the Bridge. Customers should expect major delays. We will be offering extra ferry trips and fewer bus trips to manage the traffic and transportation demand. For complete modified bus route and ferry trip information, click HERE.
