Bridge the Gap for Health Care
A Walk Across the Golden Gate Bridge Sidewalks
June 19, 2004


The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, the agency that operates the Golden Gate Bridge, has issued a special event permit to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to conduct a walk across both sidewalks of the Golden Gate Bridge during the morning of Saturday, June 19, 2004. (Course Map - PDF) As many as 8,000 participants are anticipated. The Golden Gate Bridge will remain at its current high level of security during this event with no backpacks or large bags, no signs, flags, banners or props allowed.

The walk being held in conjunction with SEIUs 2004 International Convention, June 21 to June 23, in San Francisco and is part of a national awareness effort to promote quality, affordable health care for all. Impacts on Golden Gate Bridge Users

Traffic: The Golden Gate Bridge will remain OPEN to vehicle traffic; however, expect delays in the Presidio, including no northbound traffic on Lincoln from 7am to noon.
Bicyclists: Golden Gate Bridge sidewalks will be closed to bicyclists from 7 am to noon. A free bike shuttle will operate between the southeast lot and the Alexander Avenue off-ramp.


Information for Bridge Walk Participants/Media Reps


Access: Participants must begin and end the walk at Crissy Field. The walk starts at 7 am. To join the walk you must check-in at the start located at the west end of Crissy Field no later than 9:30 am. Those attempting to park and/or start directly at the Bridge will be turned away.
Parking and Transportation: There is no parking for this event at Golden Gate Bridge. Parking near Crissy Field is extremely limited at the Crissy Field Main Parade Grounds. Attendees must arrive by public transportation (call 511 of Bay Area Transit information) or be dropped off. SEIU members will have shuttle transportation provided to/from all downtown Convention hotels at 7, 7:30 and 8 am from Embarcadero BART to Crissy Field.
Security: No backpacks or large bags, no signs, flags, banners or props; personal belongings subject to security screening.
Crissy Field Program: 11 am to 1 pm.

Media Interviews and Images: Arriving at Crissy Field between 10:30 and 11 am will ensure best coverage of program speakers and after-the-walk interviews as the program is scheduled at Crissy Field from 11 am to 1 pm. Due to safety considerations NO media interviews, video, or photography may take place on Bridge sidewalks, per Mary Currie, Golden Gate Bridge Public Affairs. Photos or video of walk must be taken from Vista Point (NE side), Visitor's area (SE lot, Strauss statue) or the NW Lot (Dillingham).
