SMART Construction Continues at the San Rafael Transit Center

Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) construction is progressing at the San Rafael Transit Center in preparation for SMART's rail extension to Larkspur. Construction will significantly impact how buses enter and exit the Transit Center and where riders board and exit buses.

Current Platform Construction & Rider Impacts

  • Platform A - Construction on southwest side complete
    • Routes 23X and 122 have returned to Platform A.
  • Platform B - Construction on west side complete
    • Northbound Route 35 and Routes 40, 40X, and 49 have returned to Platform B.
  • Platform C - Construction in progress, all routes moved to Temporary Boarding Area
      • Northbound Routes 30, 70, 71X, and 101 will move to the temporary boarding area between platforms C and D.
  • Platform D - New first-in, first-out operation
    • All buses serving Platform D will pull all the way forward to 2nd Street as they enter the Transit Center. This means that riders should be prepared to board their bus anywhere along this platform. This will be a permanent change. This first-in, first-out operation affects Golden Gate Larkspur Ferry shuttle Route 31, all Marin Transit routes, Marin Airporter, Sonoma County Airport Express, Greyhound Bus, and Sonoma County Route 38.
  • 3rd Street Sidewalk Construction
    • From April 15 through May 1, the 3rd Street sidewalk near the San Rafael station will be CLOSED, as part of construction. During this time, SMART passengers can access the San Rafael Transit Center from Tamalpais Avenue or Hetherton Street. Look for detour signage on the train platforms. For more info and a map, visit the SMART news page.

Ambassadors will be onsite to assist riders, and signage will be posted to direct customers to correct boarding locations.

As construction progresses to other platforms, other routes will be temporarily assigned to the Temporary Boarding Area.

For your safety, please stay out of construction zones and always use marked detours when passing through the Transit Center.
