"Clean Air Vehicles" Cross Free on Golden Gate Bridge

Beginning Thursday, January 2, 2003, vehicles classified by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as a "Clean Air Vehicle" will be allowed toll-free passage on the Golden Gate Bridge during carpool hours only. Golden Gate Bridge carpool hours are 5 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

To receive Golden Gate Bridge toll-free crossing during carpool hours only, the vehicle must pass through a staffed lane. The driver must stop and advise the toll collector of their "Clean Air Vehicle" status and the distinctive DMV decal (shown below) must be visible to the toll collector. If the vehicle has a FasTrak tag, the owner should "bag the tag" or request the collector to void the charge when passing through the toll plaza.

"Clean Air Vehicles" are those that run solely on electricity, propane or compressed natural gas. Hybrid vehicles that use gasoline DO NOT qualify in accordance with the DMV "Clean Air Vehicle" regulations. Only vehicles registered by the California DMV and displaying the Clean Air Vehicle decal below will be eligible for toll-free crossing.
