Partnership Program Status

On October 26, 2007, at 10 am, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to drop discussion of the Partnership Program.

On October 15, 2007, a press release was issued that includes proposed modified concepts of the originally proposed Partnership Program.

On September 28, 2007, the Board of Directors met and discussed the potential GGB Partnership Program at their regularly scheduled meeting at 10 am at the Toll Plaza Administration Building. The Board did not take action on this matter.

The public is invited to stop by at one of the scheduled open houses and provide comments about the proposed Partnership Program. There will be a comprehensive presentation showing how this concept has worked in other locations such as the National Park Service and how it could work at the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Open House presentation is now available. The public may submit comments at an Open House, online at or in writing to Secretary of the District, PO Box 9000, Presidio Station, San Francisco, CA 94129. Please submit comments by September 27.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District) is responsible for the operation of Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Transit, and Golden Gate Ferry using bridge tolls, transit fares, limited operating grants, and revenues advertising and concessions. The District is now facing a $80 million shortfall for the coming five-years having been reduced significantly from $454 million in 2002. The District’s Strategic Plan for Achieving Long-Term Financial Stability calls for the development of revenue from non-traditional sources, including a potential partnership program.

Any Partnership Program developed for the Golden Gate Bridge must take into account and be sensitive to the fact that the Bridge is an engineering marvel and a vital public transportation facility. It must also enhance the value of the Golden Gate Bridge “brand” and image as an internationally recognized icon of historical engineering and architectural significance. The Partnership Program envisioned does NOT involve naming rights of the Bridge and does not involve advertising on the span itself.

At the August 24, 2007, meeting of the Governmental Affairs and Public Information Committee, an executive summary and discussion on a potential Partnership Program for the Golden Gate Bridge took place. At the end of the meeting, the Committee voted to bring the matter back to the full Board of Directors at their second regularly scheduled meeting in September, which is set for September 28 at 10 am.


Potential Partnership Program for the Golden Gate Bridge to be Discussed Friday, August 24, 2007, at Governmental Affairs Committee Meeting

On Friday, August 24, 20007, the Governmental Affairs and Public Information Committee of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. and will be presented a report on the first phase of work undertaken on the development of a potential partnership program for the Golden Gate Bridge. The issue will be presented for discussion and possible action. If approved by the committee, the issue must still go to the full Board of Directors for consideration. There will be at least a two-week break between the GAPI Committee’s consideration of the report and the Board meeting where the item will up for a vote; the earliest being September 14, 2007.

The executive summary is now available. There is also a very short staff summary available. The matter will be taken up very close to 9 a.m. as the committee’s agenda is short. The Item is listed on the meeting agenda as: Discussion and Possible Action Regarding Approval to Implement Phase II of Contract 2007-D-2, Consultant to Provide Development and Implementation of a Corporate Sponsorship Program.

The following information is public now: (1) Report from November 2006 that explains that the District is looking into the development of a partnership program, the two phases of work, and the contract award to the consultant; (2) The following statements are public at this time as well: (a) The program will be consistent with mission and goals of the District; (b) There will no naming rights involved in this program and there will no brand signage on the Bridge or toll booths. Signage may be allowed in the visitor’s area, as approved, (c) The program will not involve benefits perceived to negatively impact the aesthetics of the Bridge, (d) The District will not directly endorse the products of partners.
