Bikes & Buses
Riding your bike to Golden Gate Transit is a fun and healthy way to commute. GGT buses that are 40-feet long or less and articulated buses are equipped with exterior bike racks at the front of the bus. Luggage bay bike racks are installed on all 45-foot long MCI buses.
Bike Safety Tips

Make eye contact with driver when using bike racks.

Always wear a helmet when riding your bike.

Cyclists share the same rights and are subject to the same responsibilities as other vehicle operators.

Ride on designated bike routes where possible.

Be visible! Wear highly visible clothing during the day and a reflective vest or clothing at night. Always ride with a light on your bike at night. Be careful to avoid blind spots of buses, trucks and other vehicles.

Always stay out of the dangerous "door zone" by riding at least 3 feet from parked cars on the street.

Bike Rack Rules
Bike access to GGT is a privilege, not a right. It is the cyclist's responsibility to read and comply with the following safety rules:
- Customers use GGT bike racks at their own risk. GGT assumes no responsibility for bikes that are lost, stolen, damaged or left on racks.
- Racks are available during all hours of operation on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- No additional fees or permits are needed.
- Bikes are NOT allowed inside buses with bike racks, even if the rack is full, except on Routes 40/42. Read more about this exception.
- Cyclists MUST load and unload bikes themselves. For safety reasons, GGT drivers may NOT leave the bus to assist cyclists.
- All loose items, such as accessories, water bottles, air pumps, luggage, flags, bags, etc., MUST be removed before loading.
Bike Rack Limitations

Single-rider, two-wheel bikes with a wheel size of 20" or larger, including road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and junior and pre-teen bikes can fit in to the bike racks.

Bikes with front fenders or tires wider than 3" will NOT fit into the exterior bike racks.

Recumbent, tandem, motorized, three-wheeled, muddy, dirty or greasy bikes are NOT permitted on racks or inside buses.

Bike handlebars cannot extend more than 42" from the front of the bus.

Bikes with rear-mounted baskets or child seats can fit on the exterior bike racks, but not on the luggage bay racks. Bikes with front-mounted baskets or horizontal racks will NOT fit on either bike rack.
Bike Racks at Bus Stops
Bike racks are available, free of charge, at over 40 Golden Gate Transit bus stops. Racks at the San Rafael Transit Center accommodate about 20 bikes. Bike Racks on Buses
All GGT buses are equipped with bike racks. Buses that are 40-feet long or less and articulated buses are equipped with exterior bike racks at the front of the bus. (Articulated buses can accommodate up to 3 bikes. Most 40-foot buses can accommodate up to 3 bikes, other 40-foot buses accommodate up to 2 bikes.)
