Sunday, May 2, 2010 Marks the 30th Anniversary of the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon,
Golden Gate Bridge Sidewalks and Roadway Remain Open During the Race
On Sunday, May 2, the 30th Anniversary Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon begins at 8 am and features a 1.5 mile swim through frigid waters from Alcatraz Island to shore, a grueling 18-mile bike race, and a demanding 8-mile run through the rugged trails of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Runners will pass under the Golden Gate Bridge roadway from about 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Both sidewalks of the Bridge as well as the roadway will remain OPEN.
After completing the swim and the bike portions, the triathletes will begin the 8-mile run to Baker Beach Battery by leaving the Marina Green, running West into Crissy Field to Fort Point below the Golden Gate Bridge. From Fort Point, they'll battle the Presidio Headlands up and under the Golden Gate Bridge roadway at the south abutment and onto the Coast Trail. Runners will continue next to the Coastal Defense Batteries (gunnery locations from the turn of the century) until they reach Lincoln Boulevard, just past Battery Dynamite. They will parallel Lincoln Blvd on the narrow trail above the Coastal Bluffs to Baker Beach, where they will return to the shoreline below. Runners will then encounter the deep sand of Baker Beach through the turnaround point until they reach the dreaded Equinox Sand Ladder (400 steps up the cliff). After reaching the top, runners will return on the Coast Trail, back under the Golden Gate Bridge roadway at the south abutment, back to sea level at Fort Point, and on to the Finish Line.
